Maestro Michael Herrera
Michael Herrera has been immersed in the folklórico community since the age of three. Introduced to the art form through his older sister’s classes with Maestra Elena Robles at CET, his journey began quite literally when he was pulled from his stroller and onto the dance floor. Since then, folklórico has remained a central part of his life, fostering a deep connection to Mexican culture, traditions, and heritage.
Throughout his elementary and middle school years, Michael continued his folklórico training and later spent all four years of high school dancing with Xochitl Cultural, where he developed both his technical abilities and passion for sharing folklórico with others. In 2017, during his junior year of high school, he began teaching folklórico and quickly discovered a love for mentoring and inspiring young dancers.
In September 2018, Michael joined the performing company of Los Lupeños de San José, where he continued to grow as a dancer, artist, and educator under the mentorship of Artistic Director Samuel Cortez Balderas. His dedication to the organization led him to assume the role of Administrative Assistant for the Los Lupeños Academy in 2024, supporting students, families, and instructors while advancing the organization’s mission of cultural preservation and education.
Outside of folklórico, Michael is completing his graduate studies and works as an Education Specialist serving high school students with mild to moderate support needs. His professional experience in education strongly influences his teaching philosophy, emphasizing patience, encouragement, cultural pride, and personal growth.
Michael currently teaches Folk III B and finds great joy in helping students build confidence, develop their skills, and connect with the rich traditions of Mexican folklórico. He believes dance is not only an art form, but also a powerful tool for preserving culture, strengthening community, and inspiring future generations.
